On Monday, we had a very special visit from beloved children's author, Michael Morpurgo to launch a week of World Book Day celebrations. Michael joined us virtually and was interviewed live from the studio.
His visit started by answering some questions all about his journey as an author and how he came to love writing. He also talked about how he feels about film and theatre adaptation of his works and we watched a clip of the incredible stage performance of 'War Horse' by the National Theatre. We were also fortunate to have some top tips on how to write from Michael, who explained the importance of 'Dream Time' during which you imagine your ideas. He also talked about how important it is to care about what you're writing about.
Michael then answered some of the 400+ questions that were posted in the Q&A from students watching both in school and at home. He talked about his process as a writer and the books he has written which are his favourites.
The visit came to a close with Michael reading to us from some of his work. He began by transporting us to the African Veld by reading an excerpt from The Butterfly Lion. Next up, we travelled to a Pacific island with an excerpt from Kensuke's Kingdom. Finally, Michael read to us from his newest release, a poem entitled 'Song of Gladness' - a poem which he wrote during the lockdown last year that has been beautifully illustrated and will be available in shops very soon.
We can't thank Michael enough for visiting us and for sharing his stories and wisdom. It was a truly unforgettable experience and one we will all treasure.
